HUDDLE

Hello, Nurses!

I don’t know about anyone else, but my algorithm loves to show me videos of people hawking magnesium foot spray. My first knee-jerk reaction was to roll my eyes and say, β€œGet outta here.” But then, my research-curious brain sent me on a hunt for evidence.

Turns out, no research has even tried to prove that magnesium applied to the feet helps you sleep (shocking, I know). But a few studies have shown transdermal application may boost serum and urinary Mg levels. Regardless, I hope the algorithm gods stop sending me magnesium foot spray videos soon!

Running for Her Patients

If you see a nurse running, it’s most likely towards a code or alongside a gurney. But nurse Sarah Rehak has been running plenty for a different reason lately: to train for the Boston Marathon on Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital’s Race for Rehab team. Rehak was inspired to become a nurse after watching her father’s brain injury recovery at Spaulding. Read how she went from watching her father’s care to now running in honor of her own patients.

Massive Cuts Proposed to Nursing ResearchΒ

The American Nurses Association has issued a statement expressing deep concern about proposed cuts to nursing research in a leaked 2026 budget by the federal administration. Among the 30% cuts proposed in HHS are condensing the 27 NIH institutes and centers into just eight, and completely eliminating the National Institute of Nursing Research and the National Institute on Minority Health. The cuts would also terminate all Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development Programs except the Nurse Corps scholarship program.

Return to β€œThe Jungle”?Β

Upton Sinclair’s groundbreaking 1906 book The Jungle opened Americans’ eyes to systemic problems in the meat industry, leading to reforms in national food inspection that ensure today’s safe food supply. But now the FDA has halted food safety quality checks after too many HHS staffers were let go. The news comes on the heels of a 15-state outbreak of E. coli in lettuce that killed one person and sickened 88 others, all of which the FDA kept quiet.

Safer Alternatives to DEHP

Patient safety is a top priority for nurses. A recent survey by The Nursing Beat found that 98.5% of healthcare professionals would prefer to use IV bags free of Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a known toxicant and carcinogen. Additionally, 77% of those surveyed supported legislation banning the use of IV bags containing DEHP, which was recently passed in California.

Nurses need to know that IV bags without DEHP are readily available and it’s time to speak up and take action for our patients. B. Braun is dedicated to providing safer alternatives to DEHP-containing products in the healthcare setting as the only supplier offering a full line of IV drugs, IV and nutrition solutions, and irrigation containers plus a robust line of IV sets and connectors not made with DEHP or PVC.Β
