Leaders Push Back

Nurses nationwide have advocated for nurse-patient staffing ratios and other initiatives to improve nurses’ working conditions and patient safety. However, 130 hospital leaders in Michigan are lobbying against legislation requiring nurse-patient ratios, limiting mandatory nurse overtime, and increasing staffing transparency. The Michigan Health and Hospital Association claims there aren’t enough nurses in Michigan to meet the legislation’s requirements and that 5,100 beds would have to close if it passed. The Michigan Nurses Association supports the legislation.

Nurse Gets First Shot — Again

In 2020, New York ICU nurse Sandra Lindsay became the first American to receive a Covid-19 vaccine — her scrubs and vaccine card are even displayed in the Smithsonian. Now, as vice president of public health advocacy at Northwell Health, she’s among the first to get the updated Covid-19 vaccine, too. “I was the first the last time, so why not be the first this time,” said Lindsay, who’s also received the Outstanding American by Choice award from US Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Nurse Donation Saves Life

A nurse in Erie, Pennsylvania saved a toddler’s life in Ocala, Florida this summer — by donating part of her liver. Logan Salva, a 20-month-year-old, has the rare genetic disorder Alagille syndrome: his malformed bile ducts can cause liver failure. With a five-year waiting list for a new liver, the family sought a living donor, who could donate a portion of their liver. When Makenzie Beach, RN, found out she was a match, she volunteered for the successful June 8 operation.
