HUDDLE

Good Morning, Readers!

Why do I love working at The Nursing Beat, you may ask? Aside from our awesome team, I love the content we produce every day, Monday - Friday, including holidays! Where else will you read about studies about blue light glasses, nurse imposters, and how much healthcare systems have spent in the past six years combating data breaches? Only here at TNB. What else do you want to read about? Tell us here.

Are Temp Nurses Employees?

A coalition of 30 healthcare staffing agencies are questioning the Department of Labor on whether temporary nursing staff should be considered “independent contractors.” All coalition members employ their nursing staff as W-2 employees, but some other agencies classify them as independent contractors. But this practice is dangerous, the coalition argues, because the nurses are denied employment-related benefits (and don’t meet FLSA criteria), and the agencies don’t necessarily provide nurses the training and oversight needed for adequate patient care. Facilities may also incur increased misclassification claims and audits.

The Serial Nurse Imposter

Brigitte Cleroux has been caught posing as a nurse — again — and charged in British Columbia with fraud over $5,000, impersonation, using forged documents, and assault. She has never completed nursing school or had a valid nursing license but has posed as a nurse multiple times over 20 years. She is currently serving a 7-year sentence for posing as a nurse at two Ottawa clinics, faces charges in Vancouver and Surrey, is wanted in Colorado, and has two active warrants for her arrest in Florida.

Ditch the Glasses

We’ve all heard it before: blue light from screens strains the eyes and ruins your sleep. But a new Cochrane meta-analysis found that blue light–blocking glasses may not reduce eyestrain, keep you alert, or improve your sleep. This is likely because there isn’t a lot of blue light to block from screens, and the glasses can’t filter much blue light, to begin with. To reduce eyestrain and improve sleep, experts recommend monitoring how close you are to your screens and how stimulating your viewing content is.
