Staff Staffing for Ohio Nurses
|
Ohio lawmakers introduced legislation that would implement legally enforceable minimum staffing standards in state hospitals. The Nurse Workforce & Safe Patient Care Act would also allow nurse staffing commissions to help establish safe staffing levels, enable hospitals to temporarily deviate from the
staffing mandates during extraordinary circumstances, and create a system for nurses to report staffing transgressions. It would also allocate $20 million for a loan-to-grant program to help people become nurses. This legislation follows a statewide nursing survey showing seven out of ten direct care nurses are considering leaving bedside nursing.

24 Hour Shifts |
What’s the longest shift you’ve worked? Nurses are weighing in on a LinkedIn thread started by a Washington-based nurse who says he worked multiple 16-hour shifts in the emergency department — followed by another shift the next day with little time to rest. But other nurses have commented with even worse
stories. One California nurse in a trauma ICU says she has worked a couple of 24-hour shifts and at least one instance of working eight, 12-hour shifts in a row. An Arizona-based nurse says she worked a 12-hour shift followed by a 24-hour shift.

High Suicide Risk
|
Here’s an upsetting but not surprising fact: healthcare workers have an increased risk of suicide compared to those working in other sectors. That’s according to a new nationally representative cohort study, which found the risk of suicide to be a whopping 32% higher. Support workers had the highest suicide risk, followed by nurses and technicians — the research showed no increased suicide risk for other healthcare workers included in the study. If you have suicidal ideation or know someone who does, call the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
