Microbiome Mysteries |
Alcoholβs impact on the gut microbiome is complex. Heavy drinking can throw off the gutβs microbial balance (not to mention cause inflammation and compromise the gut lining), and cutting back on heavy consumption can improve gut health, as seen in patients treated for alcohol use disorder. Moderate intake may promote microbial diversity, though itβs unknown how
cutting back on alcohol affects the microbiome of moderate drinkers. But with all the known health consequences of alcohol consumption, drinking less is always an excellent way to improve your overall health.

Wiggle Butts for Self-Compassion
|
Weβve previously reported how petting a dog can boost your oxytocin levels. Hereβs another reason to find a canine friend: pet ownership is linked to higher levels of self-compassion among nurses, specifically, potentially aiding in self-care and combating burnout. The caveat is that not all breeds may be suitable for everyone, and nurses should consider factors like lifestyle β how much time you have for pet care, how much space you have in your home, etc. β and allergies before adopting.Β

Camden, N.J.-based Cooper University Health Care has achieved an "A+" credit rating from Fitch Ratings, the highest in its 137-year history. Once near bankruptcy, Cooper has nearly doubled its liquidity over the last five years, and Fitch projects that Cooper will maintain robust cash flow in the near future. Cooper achieved this remarkable financial turnaround through
successful growth initiatives such as physician recruitment efforts, which, combined with initiatives to increase primary and secondary service areas, will help support its continued growth.Β

THE BREAK ROOM WITH SELF-CARE CATALYST |
Our Identities Outside of Nursing |
When our identities are solely tied to our jobs, burnout becomes a significant threat for several reasons:
Constant Pressure: If our self-worth and identity are solely derived from our job performance, we tend to put immense pressure on ourselves to excel constantly. This pressure can lead to chronic stress, overwhelm, and poor self-esteem
Lack ofΒ Β Boundaries: Blurred lines between work and personal life result in overwork, neglecting self-care, and sacrificing leisure time.
Reduced Sense of Control: Relying solely on our job for identity leaves us feeling trapped and helpless, lacking the bandwidth to navigate career shifts or find meaning beyond our work.
Neglected Personal Needs: Ignoring personal needs such as relationships and self-care fosters emptiness and isolation, fueling burnout and sadness.
An identity beyond work is essential for resilience, fulfillment, and a healthier work-life balance. You are more than a nurse. Click here if you need help reconnecting with yourself outside of your job as a nurse.
