Kaiser Strike Kicks Off

Some 75,000 Kaiser Permanente healthcare workers across six states and DC walked off the job on Wednesday. Kaiser had offered location-dependent wage increases of up to 4% each year for four years. Still, the coalition of unions representing the employees rejected the offer, saying it doesn’t cover rising costs of living. Instead, they ask for a 6.5% raise across the board for the first two years and a 5.75% raise in the next two years. The strike is set to last until tomorrow; however, a longer strike could come next month if a deal is still not reached.Β

LA Dodgers Honors Nurses

Early last week, the LA Dodgers held their first-ever Nurse Appreciation Night. During a pregame ceremony, four nurses β€” James Nimnualrat, Nalina Burgos, Ghina Lorca, and Diem-Chi Phung β€” were honored on the field and selected through a Nurse.org nomination and voting process. Prizes were donated by Adni Marketplace, Clove Shoes, NuWest Travel Nursing, and Fabletics Scrubs. A few nights later, Alice Benjamin, Nurse.org's Chief Nursing Officer and Ask Nurse Alice podcast host, was honored during the Dodgers Healthcare Appreciation Night.Β

Promised Funds Withheld

Earlier this year, Mississippi lawmakers approved a $103.7 million grant program to help the state’s struggling hospitals. At the time, some advocates and lawmakers said the funds were insufficient, but they didn’t know how right they were. Due to an error in the statute, only about a third of Mississippi’s hospitals qualify for the money. At some point, the source of the funds was changed from the state’s general fund to federal Covid-19 relief, making the new money ineligible for hospitals that have already received pandemic relief funds.Β

Steps to Decrease Your Financial Stress

Nurses and healthcare professionals are dealing with enough stress as it is. So, how can we eliminate financial stress to better focus on our careers and helping others?

A few easy steps can help turn that stress into confidence:

  • Create a Plan: The best way to assess where you stand and prioritize the next steps is with a personalized financial plan. TNB readers can download this free digital financial plan!

  • Outline Your Goals: Whether you want to retire at 50 and be with family or go PRN and travel the world, writing out short-term and long-term goals will set your values and priorities.

  • Automate Your Finances: Once your plan and goals are established, take some time to set up automatic transfers and deposits to take the stress and guesswork out of it!
