HUDDLE

Good Morning, Readers!

I am getting ready to see all my nursing friends this weekend to kick off the ViVE conference festivities. We will be covering the press, along with some amazing nurse entrepreneurs by our side, including:

Taofiki Gafar-Schaner 👉 Founder of SafeSeizure

Emma Geiser 👉 Founder of Nurse Fern

Sarah Warren 👉 Founder of Don’t Clock OutΒ

One of my favorite parts about this job has been building friendships with nurses in this space, and it has opened my eyes to the professional opportunities we have beyond the bedside.

Stay tuned for coverage of the conference next week!

HANDOFF

When Will it Stop

Nursing has never been a β€œsafe” career, and workplace violence has only gotten worse for nurses in recent years. The Georgia Nurses Association and the Georgia Hospital Association want to work together to do something about it. The two groups held the first Workforce Violence Prevention Summit at the Georgia State Capitol on Feb. 12, eight months after a gunman at Atlanta’s Northside Hospital Midtown killed a CDC employee, Amy St. Pierre, and injured four others.

Triumph and Perseverance

It was 1968, the tail end of the US Civil Rights movement and the tumultuous year in which Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, and Ruby Hendley began working as a Black nurse’s aide at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers, Florida. Today, 56 years later, during Black History Month, she’s the longest-working nurse in the hospital’s history. Even when patients refused to be treated by her and doctors discriminated against her, Hendley persevered. Read her story.

Gender Gap of the HeartΒ

The health benefits of exercise, especially for the heart, are undisputed. But apparently, they aren’t equal. A new study found that women can exercise less time than men and experience more benefits. Leisure time physical activity reduced women’s risk of death by 24%, compared to 15% for men. Women experience the maximum survival benefit after just two hours and 20 minutes of moderate to vigorous a week, while it takes men five hours to get the same result.

  • Mary Eliza Mahoney: Mary Eliza Mahoney was the first Black nurse to earn a registered nursing license in 1879.Β

  • Colonel Lawrence Washington: Colonel Lawrence Washington became the first man to enter the Army Nurse Corps in 1962 and then the first male nurse ever to serve in the US Army.Β

  • Founding Presidents of NBNA: Lauranne Sams and Dr. Carrie Frazier Brown are two founding presidents of the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA), which boasts over 200,000 members today.Β

  • Virginia Allen: Virginia Allen is the last surviving Black Angel, one of the Black nurses employed at Sea View Hospital from 1928–1960, who helped cure tuberculosis. Their story is documented in this book by Maria Smilios.Β
