HANDOFF

Nursing Unit on Wheels

On Saturday, July 19th, two new mobile care units will be opened to the public at a community health fair in East Greensboro, North Carolina. These 37-foot mobile units commissioned by The North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s School of Nursing each have two private examination rooms—one for simulation training, and the other for community outreach, giving students hands-on experience and providing at-risk populations in the area with mobile healthcare. Other nursing schools in North Carolina and Mississippi have mobile units. Look inside here!

Breakthrough in Tissue Regeneration

Some mammals, like rabbits, can fully regenerate part of the ear after injury, but other mammals cannot. A study published in Science in June discovered this is because of a lack of retinoic acid, a molecule derived from vitamin A. The research team found if they supplemented mice and rats with retinoic acid or activated a key enzyme that helped create it, they could induce ear tissue regeneration. They hope these results will serve as a stepping stone toward regenerative medicine in humans.

Nurses Welcome Healthcare Robots

Experts project the global robotic nurse industry will surpass $2.77 billion by 2031, and hospitals are starting to integrate AI-powered robots like Moxi and TUG to offer much-needed assistance to their staff. One lab in Japan has created the “nurse bear,” which can gently lift patients in and out of bed. Research shows nurses don’t mind their robot counterparts—in fact, they welcome the help. Many feel nursebot integration meets the goals of reducing nurse workload, freeing up human staff for direct patient care.
