No Mandatory Overtime

A new law in New York prohibits healthcare employers from requiring nurses to work more than their regularly scheduled hours. Limited exceptions apply, including during a healthcare disaster, declaration of emergency, or when overtime is needed for safe patient care. If a healthcare organization will use an exception for 15 days or more in a month or 45 days or more over three consecutive months, it must report it to the New York State Department of Labor.

Parking Lot Attack

A nurse was “blitz-attacked” while taking a break in the HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital parking lot in Fort Walton Beach. The stranger hit her five or six times with a tire iron but fled after the nurse fought back and screamed for help. Police found the assailant two hours later on a bike, wearing a freshly bloodied shirt and carrying a bloody tire iron in the bike’s basket. Police arrested him and charged him with unpremeditated attempted murder. The nurse survived the assault with severe lacerations and swelling that required eight surgical staples.

Child Vaccination Funding Cut

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reducing state funding for child vaccination programs. Officials say this is due to cuts in a federal immunization grant due to a recent debt ceiling deal between the Biden administration and the CDC. It’s unknown how much of a reduction each state will receive. The debt ceiling deal also rescinded $27 billion in unspent federal money for Covid relief and state funding to fight the spread of sexually transmitted infections.

Ego Death in Nursing 

The ego is innate and universal to all humans. An individual’s ego differentiates self from others through the reality principle - the capacity to distinguish what is occurring in the mind from what is happening in the external world. 

Ego functioning includes judgment, sense of reality, impulse control, interpersonal functioning, cognitive processes, defensive functioning, stimulus barriers, mastery competence, and the ability to provide and self-soothe. All things meant to keep you safe - inside this safety lives conditioned mind patterns and limiting beliefs. 

When triggered, limiting beliefs such as “I’m not a real nurse if I leave the bedside” and the nervous system responses that once kept you safe emerge.
