Ego Death in Nursingย
|
|
The ego is innate and universal to all humans. An individualโs ego differentiates self from others through the reality principle - the capacity to distinguish what is occurring in the mind from what is happening in the external world.ย
Ego functioning includes judgment, sense of reality, impulse control, interpersonal functioning, cognitive processes, defensive functioning, stimulus barriers, mastery competence, and the ability to provide and self-soothe. All things meant to keep you safe - inside this safety lives conditioned mind patterns and limiting beliefs.ย
When triggered, limiting beliefs such as โIโm not a real nurse if I leave the bedsideโ and the nervous system responses that once kept you safe emerge.ย
What beliefs about being a nurse (insert specialty here) keep you safe?ย
Do these beliefs still serve you?ย
The ego death is the awakening to the awareness that these beliefs no longer serve you.
