HUDDLE

Hey-O Nursing Beat Friends!

Today’s spooky diagnosis might be one that would set Daryl Dixon off on a tangent about the living dead. Cotard’s, or Walking Corpse, Syndrome occurs when someone believes that they have died. People with the disorder have also claimed that they are missing organs, limbs, or have become immortal when the opposite is proven to be true. Unfortunately, this diagnosis often occurs in people who have mental illness and they forgo necessary practices like personal hygiene and eating as their belief that they are dead is so strong.

We’ve Got a Deal!

Kaiser Permanente and the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions, representing around half of Kaiser’s workforce, have reached a tentative deal after a three-day walkout. The agreement would set the minimum wage to $25 in California and $23 in other states. The 21% wage increase would be staggered over the four years of the contract. The tentative agreement also helps protect against Kaiser’s ability to outsource jobs. Union members who participated in the strike will vote to ratify the contract on Wednesday.

UNAP’s Not Napping

As one strike potentially draws to a close, another may soon begin. For the second time this year, the Rochester Union of Nurses and Allied Professionals (UNAP) in New York has voted to authorize a strike, which would take place for five days from Oct. 23–28. Safe staffing is a key issue under negotiation. The hospital says the two-day strike in August cost the health system $6 million to hire temporary replacement nurses. The health system and union will resume negotiations this week.

Temporary Classification

The debate over whether temporary nursing staff should be classified as W-2 employees or independent contractors continues. As we reported previously, 30 healthcare staffing agencies sent a letter to the Labor Department seeking guidance on the classification. They raised concerns about tech-enabled agencies that do not employ their nurses as W-2 employees as they do. According to Becker’s, a labor law firm representing tech-assisted nurse staffing platforms sent a counter letter, arguing that staffing platforms that use very different business models shouldn’t be subject to a “one-size-fits-all” rule.

THAT REMOTE LIFE WITH NURSE FERN

The Most Important Remote Nurse Application Tip

After you’ve updated your resume and narrowed down your job target, you’re ready to hit the applications.

Our biggest tip in this process is this: apply immediately! If you don’t apply immediately, you’ll probably miss out altogether as the most popular job postings often close to new submissions in 24 hours or less.

  • Do not save a job posting to apply to after work or when you get home.

  • Do not let your nerves get the better of you, and ponder if this is the right opportunity.

  • Do not let self-doubt creep in and worry about being considered since you only meet basic requirements.

You’ve done the pre-work, you know what you’re qualified for, and your application materials are ready for submission. Trust yourself and complete the application.
