Multi-Million Dollar Boost for Nurse Education in Boston
The US Labor Department has awarded a $5.8 million grant to the nursing school at Mass General Brigham in Boston to train nurse educators. The grant is part of $78 million the federal department is issuing to nursing programs in 17 states to “strengthen and diversify” the nursing workforce. The 5-year grant to the MGH Institute of Health Professions is the second largest in the nation after the $6 million grant to the University of California at Davis.

Former Nurse and Substitute Nurse Save Choking Child’s Life
The chicken nugget wasn’t supposed to be deadly—but it nearly became so when a kindergartener began choking on it during lunch at a Long Island elementary school in New York. Fortunately, school security officer Sarah Atkins, who had been a nurse for over two decades, responded quickly with the Heimlich maneuver. When it failed, she didn’t give up and, with the help of substitute nurse Judy Marcus, saved the child’s life.

The money has gone toward settling federal allegations of fraud, bribery, and harm, found a Reuters investigation. Even more disturbingly, US prosecutors helped these doctors avoid answering for the horrifying medical mistakes detailed in the article, including one in which a New York nurse provided the key evidence.
