AI Identifies Cancer

Tech giant Microsoft and digital pathology company Paige are combining forces to battle cancer. The partners are building the world’s largest image-based artificial intelligence model for identifying cancer. The AI model, trained on billions of images, will be able to identify common and rare cancers that are difficult to detect. Microsoft and Paige will publish a paper on their new AI model on the preprint server arXiv, saying the model outperforms anything published so far.

Still In Short Supply

The current drug shortage the nation faces affects hospital departments, some more than others. In a new survey by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices and the ECRI Institute, 60% of responding pharmacy leaders, supply chain administration, pharmacists, nurses, and clinical engineers said more than 20 products were in shortage for the first half of 2023. Compared with other departments, more workers in surgery/anesthesia departments reported shortages (75%). Perhaps surprisingly, fewer healthcare workers in psychiatry departments did (15%), despite the current β€” and significant β€” ADHD med shortage.

Bye, Bye, Budget

Republicans in the House are pushing for significant cuts to the CDC’s health initiatives. They’ve proposed to cut one-sixth of the agency’s budget β€” $1.6 billion! β€” that would gut sex education for teens and health workers vaccine mandates while eliminating various funding sources for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. These potential changes come on the heels of other cuts to the CDC’s budgets for childhood vaccination programs and STI prevention.Β

The amount that Kaiser Permanente is paying California as part of a settlement for allegedly disposing of thousands of private medical records, hazardous materials, and medical waste β€” including blood and body parts β€” in dumpsters intended for local landfills.

MAP OF THE MODERN NURSEΒ WITH DEBRIEFING THE FRONT LINES

Are You Sober Curious?

Nurses have normalized break room conversations starting with "I need a drink," post (night) shift mimosas, self-medicating bodily aches, and relying on benzos to sleep and function. Nurses are screaming for help while simultaneously laughing together because only nurses know what nurses see.

The intense pressure of being responsible for the well-being of others is overwhelmingly exacerbated by inadequate support and unsafe working conditions. Studies show that chronic stress enhances substance use and is a major risk factor for the development of addiction. The pandemic worsened pre-existing occupational stress, compassion fatigue, cumulative caretaking trauma, and the feeling of being overworked and undervalued.Β

Maybe you have tried but don't fit into the traditional sobriety group. Maybe you are looking to explore without rules and labels what sobriety from alcohol and/or drugs means for you. Whatever it may be, keep looking for the light ahead.
