Hello, Nurses!

Today, we’re highlighting an interview from December with Dr. Dan Weberg, PhD, MHI, RN, FAAN, a top nursing thought leader with an enormous following. In our exclusive Q&A, he talks about his experiences in nursing, and what we can do if we come together.Β

❝ There are 4.3 million registered nurses in the United States. If we wanted to do something and were coordinated, we could do anything. We could change legislation, we could change policy, we could change entire systems,” says Weberg.

What would you change about nursing? Do you feel like you have the power to change anything? Tell us here!

β€œScheduling Is Everything”

Among the biggest contributors to occupational stress for nurses are shift work and scheduling challenges, according to findings from a qualitative study, β€œScheduling Is Everything,” recently published in the Western Journal of Nursing Research. The study analyzed themes from extensive interviews with 16 nurses and found that scheduling plays a huge role in job satisfaction, which is higher when they have some control over their shifts. Read more about the findings of the study and what they means.

Protection from Surgical SmokeΒ

A Florida bill has jumped through another hoop on its way to hopefully offering medical professionals stronger protections against surgical smoke. Surgical smoke has emerged as an under-appreciated work hazard, particularly to those in OR rooms during procedures. More and more states are considering legislation like Florida’s House and Senate bills to protect workers from surgical smoke. The proposed Florida legislation would require hospitals to use smoke evacuation systems to filter out contaminants from the smoke.

World’s Tiniest Pacemaker

Pacemakers have become vital for managing certain arrhythmias, reducing the risk of a serious or fatal cardiac event for millions of people. But even the sleekest pacemakers may be too large for newborns who need them. Enter the world’s smallest pacemakerβ€”the size of a grain of salt! Even more amazing, it’s powered by light, it can be implanted non-invasively with a syringe, and it dissolves over time, so no surgery is required to remove it.

Mystery Diagnosis Minute

Hey everyone! We made it to April! The year is flying by so quickly and it’s hard to believe we’re almost a quarter of the way through already! It’s easy to forget important dates and appointments when time flies by so fast, so today I’m gently reminding everyone that April is National Cancer Control Month.Β

This month focuses on prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatments, and palliative measures that couple with a cancer diagnosis. Our mystery diagnoses this month will focus on some signs and symptoms of different cancers on the rise.

🧡 This cancer affects the bone marrow and blood and is most often diagnosed in patients that are older than 60, but, there is now a rise in diagnoses in younger adults and children.Β

🧡 Early symptoms mimic the symptoms of having a persistent cold or the flu.

🧡 Later on, symptoms include easy bruising and bleeding, epistaxis, night sweats, petechiae, and wounds that just won’t heal.Β
