It’s been a year and a half since Mount Sinai Health System instituted a four-day workweek for nurse managers, and it appears to be going well. Chief Nurse Executive Beth Oliver, DNP, RN, told Becker’s that the program has helped retain staff by improving engagement and satisfaction. That’s no surprise to 4 Day Week Global, which has advocated for innovation since 2019. Senator Bernie Sanders has proposed a federal bill to make four-day workweeks the norm.

Ramadan began a week ago, and Children’s Minnesota introduced a unique way to honor the religious celebration: by debuting “modesty gowns” from Henna & Hijabs, a Minnesota company founded by Black
Muslim women who design modest medical clothing that meets the needs of Muslim females. The inclusive, culturally sensitive pediatric gowns have three-quarter length sleeves and a detachable hijab component, and they can be worn to close in the front or back.

No one enjoys a colonoscopy prep, but these procedures remain the best tool available to prevent colon cancer, which is rising among younger adults and accounted for over 52,000 deaths last
year. Yet the prep doesn’t have to be as miserable as it usually is, argues gastroenterologist Benjamin Lebwohl. In an article from STAT, he points out the wealth of research showing that a diet high in starch and protein the day before works just as
well as a clear liquid diet.

One of the newest trends in patient care is taking the advanced care that usually occurs in the hospital to the home setting. #saywhat? Let’s look a little closer.
Kaiser Permanente’s program is called Advanced Care at Home:
Certain medical conditions may be able to get care in the patient’s home, including equipment setup, 24/7 care and monitoring, prescription delivery, and more.
Services may include in-person and telehealth visits from clinicians, 24/7 phone support and remote monitoring, prescription management, and medical care such as lab draws, diagnostic imaging, and wound care.
Kaiser often leads the way in new medical programming. If more systems adopt similar practices, what does this mean for nursing? It will depend, but with the increased use of virtual nurses and nurses in the home, opportunities for nurses to work outside the hospital with higher acuity patients may expand. This is a future opportunity to watch!
