Good Morning, Readers!

Can you believe we’re already in July?! Every summer, I try to create (and complete) a summer bucket list. It’s a great way to keep yourself accountable in making the most of the summer with family, friends, and community! I’ve already started checking some things off my list; my favorite so far has been mini golf with family.

Now I want to know what you have on yours. More sunshine? Trips to the beach? Submitting your PTO? Send some ideas my way here!

Can Nurses Get Drafted?

In the past few weeks, the possibility of a medical draft has sparked an explosive trend among nurse influencers on social media. The last military draft happened during the Vietnam War, but nurses have never been drafted. The medical draft can be enacted in times of national emergency and applies to nurses, doctors, and EMTs with a current license. Although some are warning nurses to get ready for this impending possibility, the Selective Service System states, “There is no draft at present.”

Child Rescued After Falling From Ship

On June 29, a young girl fell from Deck 4 of a Disney cruise ship traveling from the Bahamas to Florida. As the emergency “man overboard” alarm sounded, the girl’s father leaped into the water after her. The ship’s rescue team activated quickly, launching a lifeboat within minutes, and both the girl and her father were pulled from the water. Although not specifically reported, the rescued passengers likely saw the cruise ship nurse, and no major injuries have been reported. They even stayed on board for their last night.

Solar Storm Peak and Its Health Effects

Over an 11-year cycle, the sun’s flares vary, with predictable periods of high and low activity. Solar storms create massive disruptions in the Earth’s magnetic field, which produce the beautiful northern lights (aurora borealis), but can also knock out radio signals, power, and GPS. It may even affect human health, and some preliminary studies have found a correlation between solar storms and headaches, systemic inflammation, and even chronic diseases. However, experts agree that radiation from most solar flares cannot pass through our atmosphere.
