The Biden administration introduced a minimum staffing rule for nursing homes requiring at least 3.48 hours of nursing care per
resident daily. The mandate, phased in over three years (five years for rural areas), also specifies that nursing homes must have an RN on site at all times, among other provisions. The nursing home industry strongly opposed this, citing challenges with existing workforce shortages and financial burdens.

Workers at the Sutter Center for Psychiatry in Sacramento, California, held a 3-day strike this week, seeking a contract that improves wages, maintains affordable health benefits, and addresses staffing levels and concerns about patient conditions. The National Union of Healthcare Workers represents around 150 workers at the center, including mental health therapists, nurses, housekeepers, and others. Workers express frustration over stagnant wages and overwork due to understaffing.
