Alix Dorsainvil, the community health nurse who was kidnapped and held hostage along with her young child near Port-au-Prince, Haiti, last month, was released unharmed last Tuesday. She and her daughter had been held for 13 days, according to El Roi Haiti, the Christian nonprofit group founded and directed by Dorsainvil’s husband. The faith-based global security company Concilium Inc. worked with the US State Department and other law enforcement officials to get the victims released, according to the Christian Post.

Get Ready for Disaster

Training for mass casualty situations, such as a mass shooting, terrorist attack, or transportation disaster, can be difficult and expensive to recreate in the classroom. Enter virtual reality. Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, has begun using VR headsets to train nursing students in mass casualty response. They use VR goggles and handheld controllers to “take people’s vital signs, open airways, stop bleeding, and tag patients based on injuries,” reports  Becker’s. Watch a video about it here.

Investing in Nursing

The US Department of Health and Human Services has announced a $100 million investment in nurse training and workforce expansion to address the growing nurse shortage. The money will be used to increase nursing school faculty, support career ladders for LPNs and vocational nurses to become RNs, and train more nurses to become primary care providers in mental health, substance use disorders, and maternal health.

Breakalgo

The lack of breaks for nurses and healthcare workers is a huge problem that affects patient care, leads to disengagement and turnover, and costs healthcare systems millions. The unpredictable and complex nature of healthcare makes it difficult for nurses to simply walk away and take a break. However, breaks are a basic human need, and nurses are accountable for their patients.

Breakalgo offers an innovative solution to this persistent issue. Inspired by a nurse innovator, this technology allows workers to note when they need a break and creates accountability through data trends. It's designed specifically for the healthcare environment where cases are complicated, procedures are demanding, and emergencies are frequent. Breakalgo provides a way to ensure nurses get the short mental and physical breaks they need to stay engaged, healthy, and able to provide the best care possible. Simple innovations like this can make a 12-hour shift less crushing. When we support our healthcare workers, we all benefit
