Doubled for Nothing

According to a new study from the CDC, getting an 8 mg dose of naloxone doesn’t offer any benefit over a 4 mg dose in a person’s likelihood of surviving an opioid overdose. Drug companies have been aggressively marketing double doses of Narcan with claims that higher doses are more effective given how potent fentanyl is compared to other opioids. But research shows the opposite β€” that lower doses may be safer.

Third Time’s a Charm?

For the third time in under a year, nurses at Ascension St. Joseph in Joliet, Illinois, held a strike last week after contract negotiations fell through again. The hospital has lost more than 300 nurses due to ongoing understaffing and low wages, but the building itself is literally falling apart, too. One nurse said they moved patients to different rooms when ceilings caved in. As the union nurses return to work this week, they’ll try to reopen bargaining discussions.Β

Scoop That Poop

Cleaning up after your dog is simply the right thing to do β€” no one likes stepping in dog poop. But as a veterinarian writes at the Washington Post, it’s also important for preventing the spread of disease. The microbes and parasites that thrive in dog waste can threaten the health of people and their pets and wild animals like coyotes and foxes, especially since parasite eggs can survive and remain infectious for years.Β Β

TECH TUESDAYΒ WITH NURSE MANNY

The Apple in Our Eyes

Apple’s Vision Pro has been officially released to the delight of Apple fanboys everywhere. The Vision Pro headset provides augmented and virtual reality, with users interacting via natural hand motions and movements. This could mean extremely realistic simulations for technical skills like programming IV pumps for nurses. The technology could help supplement in-person training and increase competency.

Modern Healthcare has reported some health systems are testing the devices for multiple use cases. Boston Children’s Hospital will use it to train nurses in simulated situations. Cedars-Sinai will be utilizing Xaia (eXtended-Reality Artificially Intelligent Ally), an application for mental health therapy, within Apple Vision Pro, offering patients self-administered, artificial intelligence-enabled, conversational therapy in an immersive environment. Sharp Healthcare believes Apple Vision Pro could allow clinicians to access medical data in immersive ways, bringing together information from electronic records, imaging scans, and other systems to visualize and interact with patient data.

As spatial computing enters healthcare, nurses can help direct this emerging technology towards its greatest purpose - leveraging immersive digital experiences to understand better and connect with patients under our care.

FINANCIAL VITALSΒ Β WITH NURSEMONEYDATE

New Grad Financial Orientation

Meet Nurse Alex; she’s balancing the two effortlessly. Alex understands that love and money are tricky, but she has the keys to harmony.

  • Open Money Talks: Alex believes in the power of transparent conversations about finances. Like in nursing, where clear communication is crucial, she encourages open discussions about spending habits, savings goals, and financial dreams with her partner.

  • Joint Budget, Individual Freedom: Alex and her partner create a joint budget for shared expenses but also maintain personal accounts for individual freedom.

  • Goals as a Couple: They set financial goals together, whether saving for a vacation or planning for retirement. Alex views these goals like a patient’s recovery plan – it takes teamwork, commitment, and patience.

Alex shows us that with trust, communication, and some planning, managing money in relationships can strengthen bonds, not strain them.
