Oregon Providence Nurses to Take Part in Unprecedented Strike |
The Oregon Nurses Association announced a potentially historic, open-ended strike across eight Providence hospitals in the state, slated to commence Jan. 10. The 5,000 striking RNs will be joined by some advanced practitioners and, for the first time in the state’s history, doctors. Key issues include staffing shortages, high healthcare costs, and inadequate paid time off. Providence is hiring for replacement nurses but struggles to address gaps left by striking practitioners.

Mask Mandates Return to Illinois Health Systems |
At a time when many feel the pandemic is over, Illinois health systems have now reinstated mask mandates amid rising respiratory infections, including COVID-19, flu, and RSV. Rush University and OSF Saint
Francis Medical Center require masks and have visitor restrictions, while other systems have put in place similar policies. The Illinois Department of Public Health reported increased illness rates, especially among young children, which emphasize the importance of vaccinations and masking to protect vulnerable groups.

Surgical Robot Learns from Videos |
Researchers have trained robots with videos to perform surgical tasks like suturing and knot-tying with human-level skill. These robots, which have even demonstrated the ability to self-correct errors like picking up a dropped needle, could help address a future surgeon shortage by reducing surgeon fatigue (they’re designed to help surgeons, not replace them). Many hurdles remain before the helpers can go online, including demonstrating safety and the robots’ ability to navigate complex anatomy, securing FDA approval, and addressing ethical concerns like patient privacy and accountability.
