Do You See What I See?Â

September was Deaf Awareness Month, but even as we move into October, the awareness ICU nurse Mikaela Thepvongsa has raised about the Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities is only picking up speed. Thepvongsa uses her TikTok to address stigma and correct misconceptions about Deaf people and others who
are hearing-impaired. One of those misconceptions is that she couldn’t become a nurse, as her Washington State University instructor told her before Thepvongsa proved her wrong.Â

New Sims for Nurses
|
A new nursing simulation lab is coming to the University of South Florida’s Health College of Nursing, just in time for the university’s 50th anniversary celebration. The new lab is a partnership between the university and Tampa General Hospital, which is investing $4.4 million over six years for the lab’s construction and implementation. One partnership goal is to address the anticipated shortage of 59,000 Florida nurses by 2035.

A Protection Twofer

According to a recent report from the CDC, a Covid vaccination reduces pregnant people’s risk of stillbirth, preterm birth, hospitalization, and death due to Covid-19, and protects their baby after birth. Infants born to mothers vaccinated at least once against Covid were 54% less likely to be hospitalized with Covid in their first three months and 35% less likely in their first six. The 2023-2024 vaccines now available are recommended for everyone six months and older.Â

It may not seem big, but this is the percentage of adults ages 30 to 49 who received a diagnosis of ADHD in 2022. This is nearly twice as many as diagnosed just two years earlier in 2020.

NURSES IN BUSINESSÂ WITH CAT GOLDEN
|
Two Valuable Entrepreneurial Lessons |
I’ve learned some lessons after owning and managing Nurses Inspire Nurses (NIN) for five years. Here are two of my most valuable!Â
Give and give some more! I grew NIN by giving my time and lots of products. Giving creates the psychological principle of reciprocity. People will most likely give back to you by purchasing or engaging with whatever you offer. Giving builds loyalty and trust. It’s my number one key to success.
No matter how successful your business is, keep your options open to multiple revenue streams. Even though I haven’t worked at the bedside since 2019, I will always keep my nursing license. I have done PRN flu clinics and Covid-19 testing jobs while owning and running NIN. Nurses are some of the luckiest entrepreneurs because
we have a lot of flexibility. Use that to your advantage!
