Healthcare starts with you. This is your beat.

β˜€οΈ Happy FriYAY readers,

Our team is currently in Philly prepping for the NTI conference with our friends at connectRN. I will be speaking on my journey from bedside to business and the importance of partnerships to build a sustainable community within nursing. Are you going to NTI? Come check me out at these times.Β

We are also hosting a networking event in Philly on May 22nd with our advisor Marion Leary, the head of innovation of Penn nursing. It’s important to connect in real life and network so that nurses can see all of the opportunities they have beyond the bedside. In Philly? We just relocated to open more space for tickets. Come hang and registerΒ here.

Stay safe. Be healthy. Be kind.Β

Male Nurse Accused of Sending X-Rated Media from Patient’s Phone to Himself

Baptist South nurse Luke Waski in Jacksonville is charged with video voyeurism and sexual cyber harassment. Waski was asked by his patient to call someone from her phone to let them know she was okay. She unlocked her phone for Waski, and he made the call but then left the room with her phone. The patient received notifications on her Apple Watch that text messages, which included nude photos and videos, were sent from her phone to Waski’s phone.

WHO: Don’t Use Non-Sugar Sweeteners for Weight Control

The World Health Organization released new guidelines recommending against using non-sugar sweeteners to control body weight or reduce the risk of noncommunicable diseases. A systematic review found that sweeteners don’t have any long-term benefit in reducing body fat in adults or children. Still, long-term use may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and mortality in adults. The recommendation applies to everyone except those with pre-existing diabetes.Β

The Nurse Robots You Need to Meet

Robotic assistants in healthcare can help nurses in several ways. For example, Moxi is designed to engage with people and complete non-patient-facing tasks, while the robotic cart TUG can safely transport medication, lab samples, and surgical supplies around the facility. In Japan, a robot nurse bear can lift and relocate (elderly) patients, and another called Dinsow functions as a kind of robotic Alexa. And then there’s the highly interactive Pepper, which can greet patients, answer basic questions, and much more.Β

Networking as a Nurse

A couple of weeks ago, we attended one of the top conferences in our industry, The American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL). With thousands in attendance, how was I to stand out?Β

Three tips I always keep in mind when networking:

  1. It is more important to be interested than to be interesting. Ask questions, and understand others’ challenges, beliefs, and points of view. Being interested makes you interesting! Read How to Win Friends and Influence People.

  2. Always lead with value. Consider resources you can share, an introduction you can make, or any assistance you can provide others. The key is to give more in value than you take in payment. Read The Go-Giver.

  3. Take notes and follow up. After an event, write down what you learned from steps one and two. What is important to this person, and how can you add value to them? Take this information and send a personalized follow-up email or DM. Use Notion to stay organized.

Your network is your net worth! How can we help you? Let’s talk soon!

Laughter is healing, and while caregiving is challenging, it can also be full of funny stories. Check out these curated caregiver stories, which range from seniors’ inappropriate (i.e., dirty) jokes to deaf patients’ loudly commenting on someone’s weight to clothing mishaps.
