This week’s spooky and weird medical diagnosis is one that might resonate with our insomniacs. In hypnagogia, that period between sleep and wakefulness, some people hear explosive sounds like gunshots or dynamite blasts when they haven’t really occurred. “Exploding Head Syndrome” is a diagnosis where the sounds may last a few seconds or be prolonged, depending on the patient. The disorder is common in stressed-out women or those who are exhausted. (I think, as nurses, we can all relate to that.)

Nursing and Climate Change

The American Nurses Association has released a new position statement calling upon nurses to help communities mitigate climate health harms. This includes educating patients about protecting themselves from the health effects of rising heat, mold, and smoke in the environment. Nurses can also help patients prepare for tornadoes, fires, and floods by first inquiring about their level of preparation for natural disasters. The ANA also suggests nurses should support decarbonization efforts and nursing research and innovation efforts into climate justice. 

Prime Healthcare Nurses Strike

Prime Healthcare nurses at four facilities in Southern California are set to strike today. The workers are part of two unions — United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals (UNAC/UHCP) and Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU/UHW) — and include RNs, licensed vocational nurses, certified nursing assistants, medical assistants, emergency room technicians, respiratory therapists, and others. The unions contend that management has not addressed issues with unsafe staffing and high turnover. 

Rusting Out

Burnout has been a huge issue over the last few years, but burnout’s opposite — rust-out — is another growing problem in healthcare. Occurring when someone’s talent is underutilized, rust-out can lead to disengagement, dissatisfaction, and uninspired work. A Gallup report from earlier this year found that about two-thirds of people do not feel engaged at their jobs. Managers can counteract rust-out by giving employees new responsibilities that engage them more or work that better aligns with their skills. Offering flexibility with hybrid and remote work may also help.
