Nursing Needs Philanthropy TooΒ |
When Michael Bloomberg donated $1 billion to Johns Hopkins University, he understood that it was more than just physicians who make a healthier world. Thatβs because his gift was also earmarked for nursing and public health education. But his gift is the exception rather than the rule. Despite being the βbackboneβ of the healthcare system, nursing education often doesnβt receive the same financial support as medical schools. That needs to change, argue two nurses at STAT.

Retention Rebound |
The good news in a recent JAMA Network Open study is that fewer nurses in 2023 planned to leave their workplace than in 2022. Those reporting they planned to leave dropped from 39% to 32%. The better news is that the study pinpointed ways to retain even more nurses: address the issues of unmanageable workloads, pay and benefits, and concerns with management and leadershipβthe top three reasons survey respondents cited for wanting to leave.

Staying Put |
Itβs well established that poverty is a risk factor for depression and other mental illnesses. But a recent study in Denmark found another risk factor thatβs even greater than living in a poor neighborhood and can affect people of every socioeconomic groupβfrequent moves during childhood. Adults who moved more than once between ages 10-15 were 1.6 times more likely to experience depression in adulthood than their peers, even after taking into account other factors.

CARING COLLECTIVELY WITH TOGATHER
|
Honoring Black Nurses Week |
Black nurses have always advocated for health equity. Mary Eliza Mahoney, the first Black licensed nurse, broke racial barriers and organized nurses for the benefit of all. This Black Nurses Week, July 26th through August 1st, we celebrate the incredible Black nurses of the past while collectively paving a better path for Black nurses today.Β
Despite progress, racial inequities remain:Β
Black Americans make up 13% of the US population, but only 6.3% of nurses.Β
88% of Black nurses report racism from patients, and 72% report the same from colleagues.Β
Reaching racial equity in nursing:
Name: De-stigmatize calling racism by its name when it occurs.
Organize: Connect with others who support your journey. Look for empowering communities focused on growth, not judgment.Β
Act: We must act against racism. By doing this collectively, we gain courage and amplify impact.Β
By drawing inspiration from trailblazers like Mahoneyβand advocating for systemic changesβnurses can lead the charge towards health equity for all.
