The “Bra Project” Prevents Wounds |
Cardiac surgery nurses at Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver noticed that the only patients who developed wounds after a sternotomy were women with large breasts. Patients weren’t formally fitted for the surgical bra they must wear post-op for several weeks, resulting in pressure injuries and sternal dehiscence that added 274 extra hospital days for 6.4% of patients. So the nurses found a new bra that fits all women and instituted a new protocol that reduced post-op wounds to zero. |

Can Mindfulness Be Harmful? |
There’s no question that mindfulness meditation can have a variety of positive impacts on people’s health and well-being, including reducing stress and blood pressure. But many people aren’t aware that it can have adverse effects too—including some of the very symptoms it treats. Though it helps improve anxiety and depression in many people, it can actually cause anxiety and depression symptoms in others. Learn more about the lesser known effects of mindfulness. |

Risks of TikTok Skincare Tips |
With about 9,500 people diagnosed with skin cancer every day in the U.S., it would seem like a good thing that girls are learning about skincare early in life—unless it’s coming from TikTok. A new study in Pediatrics found girls as young as 7 are sharing expensive skincare routines on the platform that send problematic messages. And only a quarter of the regimens included sunscreen, the most important component of a healthy skincare routine. |

Mystery Diagnosis Minute |
Hey everyone! This month, we’re recognizing 3 very important healthcare awareness months; Alzheimer’s disease, brain health, and PTSD awareness. Today’s mystery diagnosis is about another type of dementia that is often confused with Alzheimer’s. (Remember, Alzheimer’s affects the brain as a whole and usually presents with memory problems first.)
🧠 This type of dementia affects the lobes within the brain that controls a patient’s behavior and how they speak and understand language.
🧠Those who have this type of dementia often are classified under 1 of the following 3 symptom groups; behavioral-variant, semantic variant primary progressive aphasia, and nonfluent/agrammatic primary progressive aphasia.
🧠Patients often exhibit repetitive movements, become impulsive, and can even develop PICA.
