The nurses at LCMC Health in New Orleans have just made state history by voting to join National Nurses United and becoming the first union of healthcare workers in Louisiana. Of more than 90% of eligible nurses who voted, 82% voted to join, taking the next step after filing a formal request to unionize in October. After National Labor Relations Board certification, they can begin negotiations and bargaining, with safe working conditions and staffing ratios as top priorities.

A Danger to Fetuses

The gastrointestinal side effects of GLP-1 agonist medications, including semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro/Zepbound), are well-established, but there’s been less data on the safety of these drugs during pregnancy—until now. A new study in JAMA Internal Medicine analyzed data from 2009 to 2021 in nearly 52,000 pregnant women with type 2 diabetes. Among those taking GLP-1 agonists, 8.3% of their infants had major birth defects, compared to 5.3% in women with type 2 diabetes in general.

An Abortion Denied

A Dallas woman who sued Texas in hopes of terminating her pregnancy has finally gotten an answer: no. When Kate Cox, a mother of two, learned her fetus has trisomy 18, she sought a court order for an abortion since Texas state law bans abortions. She worried giving birth could harm her health and future fertility. A state judge granted her request, but the Texas Supreme Court overturned it Monday—after Cox left the state for the procedure.
