Good Morning, Nurses!

Today’s newsletter brings exciting news for those of us nearing midlife…some genius found a way to test for colon cancer with a blood test instead of a colonoscopy. Let the cheering begin! No more bowel preps and no more losing at least one whole day of your life to this screening. I may be making this a bit personal… What medical/dental procedures do you dread? Tell me here.

Combating Colon Cancer

An independent advisory panel recommended the FDA approve a blood test that accurately detects 83% of colon cancer cases, including 100% of stage 2 cases. If approved, the test could help slow the second-leading cause of cancer death. Colorectal cancer rates more than doubled between 2001 and 2018, despite the effectiveness of colonoscopies in preventing it. The problem is that incidence is rising in younger adults—before the recommended screening age—and many people skip the invasive colonoscopy.

Following Her Dreams

Like the Hamilton song tells us, immigrants get the job done. The US was built with the sweat and tears of hard-working immigrants, but getting the job done is harder when you’re undocumented. That didn’t stop Perla Valdovinos Galvan from following her dream of becoming a nurse. When her father died from medical negligence when she was 13, Galvan decided nursing was her calling. Ten years later, she graduated from Sacramento State with a nursing degree.

Nurses, Nurses Everywhere

From the Northwest US all the way to Florida, dozens of nursing programs are launching or expanding. Butler University in Indianapolis is starting a new BSN, West Texas A&M University is expanding its program to include a mental health specialty, and Montana State University is adding a doctor of nurse-midwifery track. Ohio State University will offer an accelerated BSN, and Oregon Health & Science University added a third location to its BSN program. See all the updates here.

Nurse Spotlight

Every day, nurses set new standards of inspiration for our patients and our community. CeraVe, the #1 dermatologist-recommended skincare brand, has teamed up with the DAISY Foundation to honor the extraordinary compassionate care of nurses. Today, we're spotlighting one of our TNB DAISY Honorees, who will be receiving a well deserved self care box from CeraVe.

Cathy Spagnoli from Lake Forest, IL has been the recipient of not one, but two DAISY Awards. She has made a huge impact on many lives. Here is what one of her patients wrote, “Not only is she great at her job but she is compassionate and kind. Her genuine compassion made me feel like I was her only patient (which I have seen the waiting room many times and this is far from true). I absolutely hate having cancer; it's scary and uncertain, and yet Cathy was one of the first people at the cancer center who made me feel like everything was going to be okay.”

CeraVe is  dedicated to fostering a positive community of recognition. Nominate your peers, encourage patients to recognize the work of your colleagues, and keep making a difference!

Who would you nominate? To learn more about nominating a special nurse in your life, visit CeraVe.com/Nurses or DAISY foundation.org.

Money Moves For Moms

Mother’s Day may be over, but we haven’t forgotten you, moms! Nurse Margaret focuses on her children's future with two smart financial moves: opening 529 College Savings Plans and custodial accounts.

  • 529 College Savings: Margaret understands the importance of education, so she invests in 529 plans for her kids. These tax-advantaged accounts will help cover future educational expenses, ensuring her children's academic pursuits are well-funded.

  • Custodial Accounts: Margaret also sets up custodial accounts under the Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA). These accounts allow her to save money that her children can use for any purpose, not just education, providing financial support as they grow.

Nurse Margaret is planting seeds for her children's success, ensuring they have the resources they need for education and beyond. Margaret knows there are various ways to save for her children's future. However, she understands that the most crucial step is to start.
