Oregon Strike Ends |
A strike of nearly 5,000 healthcare workers at Providence Health in Oregon ended after eight RN bargaining units voted to ratify new contracts. The agreements include wage increases of 20%β42% over the life of the contract (with an immediate 16%β22% raise), improved staffing policies, and more. The strikeβthe largest in Oregonβs
history and the first to involve physiciansβsparked a tide-turning mediation requested by Gov. Tina Kotek. The strike underscored healthcare workersβ united push for better conditions and patient care.

The Value of Guest Service Ambassadors |
In the first year of the pandemic, emergency department patient walkouts increased by more than 50%. But guest service ambassadors, non-clinical staff who help patients with check-ins, provide them with updates, and manage their expectations, can help. A new study found that the ambassadors effectively reduced patient walkout rates at one academic hospital from 3.4% to 2.0%. This reduction was especially pronounced among minority racial groups and women.

USDA Lacks Bird Flu Staff |
When the Trump administration enacted its sweeping purge of federal employees, many scientists and inspectors who dealt with the bird flu, including a quarter of staff in a critical disease testing office, were fired. The USDA is now struggling to rehire bird flu staff as the outbreak continues to spread. And some of those who have returned to the job have yet to receive their federal laptops, preventing them from adequately carrying out their work. Experts warn these setbacks could have lasting impacts on agricultural disease prevention and recovery.
