A Cure for Type 1 Diabetes?

After living with Type 1 diabetes for years, nurse Amanda Smith underwent an investigational stem cell treatment in February 2023β€”several months later, she completely stopped taking insulin. The groundbreaking procedure involves implanting lab-grown islet cells into the liver and using immunosuppressive drugs to prevent rejection of the foreign cells. While the therapy is very promising, it’s still in early stages and it’s unknown how long the therapy will continue working or remain safe. Last year, the FDA approved an islet cell therapy from organ donors.

The Endemic Covid

Though COVID-19 cases are rising again and a new vaccine is out, you couldn’t tell by looking at people’s behavior. As the New York Times reports, many have adopted a more relaxed attitude, including not only skipping masks, but also avoiding testing and isolation. While some people still take precautions, there is a broader shift toward treating COVID-19 as an endemic issue, not unlike a common cold. Experts say this complacency is as much an issue of confusion (due to the unpredictability of the virus) as it is fatigue.

Paying for Organs

Due to an ongoing and severe organ shortage, more than 90,000 people in the US are waiting for a new kidneyβ€”could financial incentives boost kidney donations? The bipartisan End Kidney Deaths Act proposes a $50,000 tax credit (paid out over 5 years) for those who donate a kidney. While proponents see this act as a win-win situation, critics worry that the program could undermine global efforts against the illicit organ trade. Some surveys show the majority of Americans support regulated compensation for organ donations.

Digital Detox for Cash!

Tell me, for $500 each month, would you do a β€œdigital detox”? That’s how much you could save each month by drastically decreasing your screen time!

A recent study showed that Americans spend around $500 every month on online purchases.Β

Here are 3 ways a digital detox is good for your finances:Β

  1. Seeing fewer ads. If you’ve ever thought about new scrubs or imagined new tennis shoes and then saw an ad, you know how sophisticated advertising has become! Avoid!

  2. Cutting back on impulse buys. It’s like going grocery shopping when you’re hungry, you come away with way more than intended. Same for online retail therapy when you think you want a dopamine boost.

  3. Gaining more time back. Reducing screen time not only saves you from the above, but it can give you back DAYS of time over the course of just a month! Use that new time to learn AI or a side hustle.
