NP Clinical Placement Woes

Bloomberg has published their fourth story on Americans’ increasing reliance on nurse practitioners (here are parts one, two and three). This one highlights the challenges advanced nursing students face in getting clinical placements, spurring a cottage industry of β€œfixers” to help. Beckers has given a great summary of five key takeaways from the story. What do you think of this series? Is Bloomberg getting things right? Or missing important context? We’d like to hear your thoughts!

Mother-Daughter RNs Learn Together

We told you last week of the father-son duo who decided to make the career switch together from firefighters to nurses. This week we bring you another family duoβ€”this time a mother and daughter who not only got their bachelor degree in nursing together previously but are now returning to school to become nurse practitioners. And for more family inspiration this season, check out these five students who all chose nursing because they were inspired by their mothers.

Good News on BMI

After years of trending upward, a recent study shows that the average body mass index in American adults finally began to decrease slightly in 2023 after hitting a plateau in 2022. Though BMI is a problematic indicator for obesity, the percentage of adults with obesity has fallen, as well. Experts point to GLP-1 agonist medications like semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro/Zepbound) as significant contributors to the falling rates.
