Off-Duty Nurse Saves Man from Hurricane Flood |
Miles Crawford, an ER nurse at University Medical Center New Orleans, is no stranger to saving lives, even when off the clock. So when he saw a man trapped in his pickup truck, pinned by Hurricane Francineβs floodwaters, he wasted no time. Crawford waded through waist-high water, smashed the truckβs rear window with a hammer, and pulled the man to safety just before the vehicle submerged. Despite cutting his hand, Crawford said the rescue was instinctive because of his training.

Americans Turn to AI for Health Info |
Though a doctor dismissed her symptoms as benign, a woman found that ChatGPT gave a much different potential diagnosis for her facial droop and severe headaches: Bellβs palsy. This led her to seek further treatment and receive effective care. And sheβs not alone: one in six adults under 30 say they use AI chatbots monthly for medical advice. But experts warn that chatbotsβ
authoritative tone may mislead patients and people need to review any answers or recommendations with skepticism.

Beware of Lead in Cinnamon |
Earlier this year, the FDA warned about 17 cinnamon products with unsafe lead levels after a lead poisoning outbreak. Consumer Reports did their own investigation and found dangerous levels of lead (exceeding New Yorkβs 1 ppm lead threshold) in 12 of 36 products tested. Brands they found to be the safest include Sadaf, 365 Whole Foods Market, Loisa, and Morton &
Bassett San Francisco. The report calls for stronger FDA regulations to reduce lead contamination in spices.

MYSTERY Dx MINUTE WITH NURSE KEL |
Mystery Diagnosis Minute |
Welcome back for another round of Mystery Diagnosis Minute. Continuing on with the topics Iβm teaching my LPN and RN students this semester, todayβs diagnosis is cardiac in origin and it might just pull on your heartstrings, as it deals with a disorder most often diagnosed at birth.
🤔 This disorder is the most common form of congenital heart disease that causes cyanosis.
🤔 This is a combination of 4 different heart defects: a ventricular septal defect, pulmonary stenosis, an overriding aorta, and right ventricular hypertrophy.
🤔 How severe the symptoms are for the infant depends on how much the blood flow is obstructed when exiting the right ventricle.Β
