Nurse To The Rescue!

During a recent flight heading to Atlanta, US Army Captain Brittany Hill began to feel hot and asked a flight attendant for ice. She suddenly passed out, and a flight attendant called for help from medical professionals. Rashon Jefferson, an urgent care nurse at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, sprang to action to care for Hill, who had thrown up on herself while unconscious. Jefferson went above and beyond her duty and gave Hill her shirt right off her back so Hill didn’t have to leave the plane covered in vomit after she recovered.

Medication Error Death

Last summer, an 81-year-old man with gastrointestinal bleeding was transferred to CHI Saint Joseph Health Main in Kentucky. He was supposed to be given the colonoscopy prep GoLytely, but a nurse inadvertently gave the patient the dialysis liquid Naturalyte, leading to his death. The nurse, caring for three ICU patients, told the hospital’s pharmacy that the barcode on the liquid she had — Naturalyte, which she thought was GoLytely — would not scan. But instead of sending a new medication, the pharmacy just sent a label. The nurse was not disciplined for the tragic incident. 

Safety After Shooting

On July 22nd, a shooting at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in Oregon left a security guard dead and another employee injured. In the past year, 38 calls to police from the hospital involved weapons. The Oregon Nurses Association is now seeking safety improvements for the state’s medical centers, including metal detectors and zero-tolerance policies for threatening behavior. Legacy reportedly has emergency department metal detectors, but it often goes unstaffed, according to a former nurse. Some other hospitals have metal detectors at the entrance, but many facilities have multiple entrances.
