New Nursing Certification |
In addition to the new burn nursing specialty, nurses can soon earn certification in cannabis nursing, too. Though the specialty was introduced in late September, the exam and certification materials are still being developed. The specialty will be particularly helpful in the 38 states that allow for the use of medical cannabis. The American Nurses Association already has a position statement on the therapeutic use of cannabis products, and the American Cannabis Nurses Association has been operating since 2010

Not So βProβ biotics |
At least one premature baby died after receiving probiotics in the hospital, and over two dozen others have had adverse events, reported the FDA. The agency warned healthcare providers and the
public about the risks of giving preterm infants any products with live bacteria or yeast, which have been given to prevent necrotizing enterocolitis in the past. The FDA also issued warning letters to Abbott Laboratories and Infinant Health for illegally selling probiotic products claiming to treat disease in preemies.

What would Drinking 30% Less Do For You? |
As healthcare providers, you have first-hand experience the trauma and stress on an unimaginable level due to the pandemic, internal workplace struggles, and a mass exodus of caregivers leaving bedside care. As a result, there has been an increase in the number of providers who are turning to alcohol to cope. In a recent study of 1170 nurses, 65% of the cohort tested positive for substance abuse problems.
Itβs hard to say no to a martini after a stressful shift, especially when your entire unit is heading out together. This makes it incredibly hard to cut down on alcohol consumption. But what if there was a way you could still have a drink, but do it mindfully?
Sunnyside is revolutionizing the approach to mindful drinking through a two-way SMS platform that allows you to create a drinking intention for your week ahead, based on your shift schedule. Track your drinks through texts and emojis and receive instant support through coaches ready to chat. A 3-minute quiz is all it takes to get started and as a TNB reader,
you get 20% off your first year!

MANAGER'S MEMO
|
Open Door Policy |
An open-door policy in nursing goes beyond the literal sense, embodying transparency, accessibility, and open communication, which is pivotal in a high-stress healthcare setting. This policy addresses the myriad challenges nurses face daily, from handling difficult patients to complex care procedures.
The linchpin of this policy is the approachability of managerial staff, creating an environment where nurses can openly discuss issues, facilitating immediate resolution and collective learning. This openness significantly enhances patient care as nurses can seek timely advice, leading to informed decision-making and improved patient outcomes. Additionally, the policy fosters positive team morale, nurturing a supportive culture
crucial in demanding healthcare environments. It underscores the value of each team member, engendering a culture of mutual respect and continuous learning, which are essential for personal growth and fostering a collaborative healthcare delivery system.
Through the open-door policy, hierarchical gaps are bridged, promoting a symbiotic relationship between nursing staff and management, ultimately contributing to enhanced patient care and a positive work atmosphere.
