HANDOFF

Nurses Emeriti

Nurses have plenty to offer after they retire, especially when mentoring younger workers. And Jefferson Health in Philadelphia is taking advantage of that fact. The system launched a Nurse Emeritus program in November 2022 with five retired registered nurses who returned as in-person mentors to nurses new to the practice. The program has expanded into multiple departments and increased the number of qualified mentors.

Asbestos Abolished

You might have thought asbestos had been entirely banned in the US since we’ve known for nearly a century that it causes cancer, including almost all of the 3,000 new mesothelioma cases in the US each year. But the first ban, in 1989, was only partial. Only last week, the Biden Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency finally outlawed all chemical uses, so find out what took so long here.

Who’s the Boss?

They’re fully digital natives who grew up with the most helicopter parents ever. But Generation Z is not to be coddled or trifled with. Their first major news event was 9/11, and they’ve grown up with two β€œwars of terror” and the worst trend of school mass shootings in history before a global pandemic pummeled their education. Now Gen Zers are becoming managers, and they’re doing things differently than past bossesβ€”very differently.

Retirement Financial Check-Up

March brings a fresh start, and Nurse Emily uses this opportunity to get her retirement plan in order. Here's what she's doing:

  • Retirement Savings Check: Emily starts by reviewing her 401(k) and IRA accounts. This helps her understand where she stands and what she needs to work on.

  • Exploring Options: She's looking at different ways to save for retirement. This includes not just her employer's retirement plan but also her own personal savings strategies.

  • Consistent Saving: Emily knows the importance of saving regularly. Even small amounts add up, so she's committed to putting aside money consistently for her retirement.

  • Emergency Fund: She's also building an emergency fund. This is crucial for dealing with unexpected expenses without disrupting her retirement savings.

Emily's journey beautifully illustrates how, with clarity of purpose and consistent steps, even the complex retirement planning journey can transform into an empowering and achievable adventure.
