Happy Fri-YAY, Readers!

On this day in 1785, Benjamin Franklin revealed his design for bifocal glasses. As someone with terrible eyesight (no, really…you don’t want to know my prescription 🙈), I am super grateful for this amazing invention!

Hope everyone has an enjoyable and safe Memorial Day weekend! TNB will be taking Monday off, but we'll be back on Tuesday. See you then!

New York-Based PA Program Opens

Looking to continue your education? Northeast College of Health Sciences is launching an MS in Physician Assistant Studies, with its first class beginning in January 2026. Designed to meet the growing demand for physician assistants—ranked 3rd place in best job overall—the 24-month hybrid program combines online coursework with in-person clinical training. Students will study on Northeast’s high-tech campus before completing clinical rotations across New York and beyond. Applications for the inaugural class are now open, and slots for a virtual open house of the program are still available.

UnitedHealth Paid Nursing Homes to Cut Transfers

UnitedHealth Group secretly paid nursing homes bonuses to reduce hospital transfers for residents, prioritizing cost-cutting over care, a Guardian investigation revealed. The widespread initiative encouraged low hospitalization rates through financial incentives and penalties, sometimes delaying critical care and causing harm. Nurse practitioner whistleblowers and internal documents detailed pressure on staff to push DNR orders and override medical decisions, while residents and families remained unaware. UnitedHealth points to a 2019 study highlighting its success in reducing hospitalizations, which doesn’t account for negative health outcomes caused by missing hospital care.

Improve Your Attention Span

Over the past 20 years, the average person’s attention span has dropped from 2.5 minutes to 47 seconds, with 24/7 news, pandemic-induced screen time, and endless notifications taking a toll. But you can rebuild your focus through intentional habits: take “active” breaks, turn off notifications, avoid multitasking, and start with enjoyable, goal-driven activities. Techniques like the Pomodoro method and small, focused steps help retrain attention. Consistency is key—like a muscle, focus improves with practice and fades without it.
