Private Equity Woes?

The tragic reason behind Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson’s death—a medical complication from negligence—is sadly growing across the country, and private equity’s increasing influence in healthcare may play a role. A recent JAMA  study of Medicare claims found the rate of serious hospital-acquired complications rose 25% in medical facilities after private equity companies acquired them, even though the patient population at those institutions was younger and at lower risk for complications.

Let’s Get It On

We may be getting one step closer to a male contraception option beyond condoms and vasectomies. The latest development is an injectable gel inserted into the sperm duct to block sperm, which dropped sperm concentration by 99% after one month. With male contraception interest rising in the wake of Roe’s  fall, several other options are in the works, too—except the ones that cause intolerable side effects.

Testing Turnaround

After a decline during the pandemic, nursing exam passing scores are on the upswing, climbing from 79.9% in 2022 to 88.6% in 2023. That’s a return to the 88.2% rate of 2019. The considerable debate now is: why? Has the test gotten easier? Has there been more “teaching to the test”? Are test makers doing a better job with communication? And do test scores even translate to actual competency on the job? MedPage Today digs into the details.

TECH TUESDAY WITH NURSE MANNY

AI for the Rectum?

Colon cancer screening just got smarter thanks to artificial intelligence (AI). New research shows that AI-assisted colonoscopies can reduce polyp miss rates by 50% compared to procedures without AI assistance.

The AI system analyzes colonoscopy videos in real time, highlighting areas that may contain abnormal growths for closer inspection by the gastroenterologist. Focusing on subtle changes in texture and appearance in the colon lining helps ensure problematic polyps aren’t overlooked.

The sharp decline in misses is very encouraging. By leveraging AI, gastroenterologists can find and remove precancerous polyps more reliably during screening colonoscopies. This technology can potentially enable earlier cancer detection and prevention - drastically improving patient outcomes. AI is rapidly proving itself, making “colon-ial” discoveries and enhancing cancer screening.
