Righting Wrongs

Jordana Latozas, a nurse practitioner in Michigan, believes she played a role in worsening the nation’s opioid crisis by prescribing too many pain pills over a decade ago. So now she’s working to undo that damage after founding the Recovery Mobile Clinic. With the help of nearly four dozen partner organizations statewide, a fleet of traveling RVs allows mobile medical teams to offer medical and social services, including vaccines, testing, and medication-assisted treatment, wherever patients with addiction are.

Layoff Blues

In the latest update on hospitals and health systems eliminating jobs, two companies in the Midwest are trimming their workforce, adding to the four US healthcare companies that cut jobs in March. Marshfield Clinic Health System in Wisconsin laid off 3% of its workers who were furloughed in January. Fisher-Titus Medical Center in Norwalk, Ohio, has laid off seven employees and cut hours for others.

Jurassic Park Dreams

The dodo bird, the Tasmanian tiger, the wooly mammothβ€”the list of species that have gone extinct since humans came on the scene is long and varied. But what if we could bring them back? And should we? Biologist Beth Shapiro must wrangle with those questions in her role as chief scientific officer at Colossal Biosciences, a biotech interested in β€œde-extinction.” In a fascinating interview at STAT,Β  Shapiro talks about how de-extinction could affect human health.

MANAGER'S MEMO

Approachability

Your body language and demeanor play a crucial role in how approachable you are. If you're always busy or seem internally tense, your team may hesitate to approach you with concerns or ideas. This perception can hinder open communication, essential for effective patient care and team cohesion. Being more approachable creates an environment where open communication thrives, leading to better patient care and a more cohesive team.
