Hey-O Nursing Beat Friends! |
Are you ready for Mystery Diagnosis Monday? This one is so rare that even I hadn’t heard of it!
🦴 Patients who have this genetic disorder have their soft tissues slowly turn into bone.
🦴 These new bones will abnormally grow into muscles, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissues in which a “bridge” of this extra bone growth extends across the joints.
🦴 The most common areas of the body affected are the neck, spine, elbows, wrists, hips, ankles and even the jaw.
🦴 Bonus Clue: This is an autosomal dominant condition. (Meaning that the patient only has to inherit the gene for this condition from one parent to get the disease.)
Think you know the answer? Check to see if you're right, here!

Time for a Change |
Last week, more than 100 nurses held a rally outside of HCA Florida Healthcare’s West Florida Division Office. Contract negotiations between HCA and the National Nurses Organizing Committee will kick off in 2024, and union members rallied to demand better behavior and support from management. Nurses say HCA is failing them and their patients with respect to
recruitment, retention, and more. As expected, HCA sees the rally as another National Nurses United stunt rooted in “unfounded claims” about HCA’s practices.

Dr. ChatGPT Will See You Now |
It’s only been a year since its launch, but ChatGPT is already changing the field of medicine, according to Axios. To name a few amazing advances, ChatGPT passed the US Medical Licensing Exam, successfully wrote discharge summaries and radiology reports (even showing empathy in answering patient questions!), and helped physicians with documentation during patient visits. Of course, concerns abound, given the AI chatbots’ potential to spread misinformation and create new biological threats.

At What Cost? |
Healthcare does not immediately come to mind when the topic of climate change and greenhouse emissions comes up. But according to a new report, it should—together, ten essential public health items, including medications, rapid testing, malaria nets, and injectables, contribute more greenhouse gas emissions each year than the city of
Geneva (3.5 megatons). On the bright side, the report notes we can reduce emissions by 70% by 2030 by taking various actions, including increasing the use of renewable energy, improving supply chain processes, and using new materials (reducing our reliance on plastic.)

THAT REMOTE LIFE WITH NURSE FERN
|
What Does a Day in the Life Look Like for a CDI Nurse? |
Have you heard about remote CDI nursing? It’s a more flexible remote nursing role, but not everyone knows what it is. Clinical Documentation Integrity requires nurses to look for ways to improve documentation in a patient chart.
Here is how one CDI nurse describes her typical work day:
She scans the hospital census to see which 10 to 15 charts she can review today.
After reading a chart, she noticed a few missing pieces of information. On one chart, a patient has a diagnosis of CHF, but there’s no NYHA classification provided to say how severe the patient’s symptoms are.
Once she determines what information needs to be added to the chart, she queries the clinical team to seek more details, ensuring the chart is more complete and accurate.
