Steward Struggles Continue |
As we’ve covered previously, Massachusetts secured $30 million from bankruptcy court to support Steward Health’s hospital operations as it tries to sell its numerous facilities. A few of those hospitals now have potential new owners, but reports suggest the state’s rescue plan for Steward’s hospitals will cost taxpayers some $700 million. And over in Ohio, a collaborative group of business and hospital leaders have raised enough funds to acquire Steward’s Warren City Hospital, but they’re still seeking more money to keep the facility operational.

Unproven Treatment Allowed |
Citing First Amendment protections, a federal judge ruled that two New York crisis pregnancy centers and a national anti-abortion group can legally promote an unproven treatment to reverse the effects of mifepristone. The safety and efficacy of this treatment, which involves using a high dose of progesterone to block mifepristone, is not backed by clinical trials and is not supported by science, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. In fact, the only clinical trial done on it was stopped early, citing safety concerns due to heavy bleeding—results which suggest the treatment is not only ineffective, but potentially dangerous.

State of US Maternity Deserts |
More than half of rural hospitals in the US—57%—do not provide maternity care, and 40% of those that do have lost money on patient services in recent years, according to a report from the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform. Some states are doing much worse than others. Out of 22 rural hospitals in Florida, a whopping 91% do not offer OB services.
Overall, the percent of rural hospitals without OB care in 19 states exceeds the US average.
