The US healthcare system has a long history of injustices and disparities, but you may be surprised to learn that garbage incinerators contribute to these longstanding issues. In Miami-Dade County, Florida—which produces nearly double the national average of garbage—plans for a $1.5 billion trash incinerator have sparked protests. Residents of predominantly Black and Hispanic communities are opposing the facility in their area over health, environmental, and property value concerns, and critics point out that six of the county’s nine existing incinerators are already in locations with high concentrations of people of color.
