Continued Staffing Issues Seen in Skilled Nursing Workforce Survey for Long-term Care

As the industry waits for an anticipated federal rule that would mandate minimum staffing requirements for nursing homes, a recent skilled nursing workforce poll reveals how much work needs to be done. LeadingAge, a community of nonprofit aging services providers, informally surveyed 891 members about their workplace staffing. The results are sobering:

  • 64% of respondents said their workforce situation hasn’t improved since June 2022.

  • Substantial workforce shortages were reported by 92% of nursing homes and nearly 70% of assisted living respondents.

  • The three most difficult positions to recruit are registered nurses (reported by 86% of respondents), LPNs (85%), and CNAs (85%).Β

You can read more of the results here.

$10,000 Donation Enables Free Online CNA CourseΒ

Premier Nursing Academy provides a free six-week CNA course sponsored by healthcare facilities that hope to reduce the nursing shortageβ€”a shortage projected to reach 59,000 nurses in Florida by 2035. Just 2.5 years old after arriving in Florida, the program graduates an estimated 50 students every six weeks out of a campus in Manatee and 100 students every six weeks at a Pinellas campus.Β

Now Gale Healthcare Foundation has made a $10,000 donation to fund the costs of putting the course online. Gale, based in Tampa, is rapidly growing, with a presence in 40 states with 55,000 registered clinicians. The online platform will allow Premier to offer the course in areas that need CNAs but may require more infrastructure to house an in-person course.

Autism Diagnoses Rise Againβ€”Because Clinicians Can Better Diagnose It

Autism rates have increased steadily for two decades, from one in 110 in 2006 to one in 44 in 2018 to one in 36 in the most recent MMWR report. The rise has been attributed to every possible factor imaginable, from evidence-based reasons, such as the advanced age of parents, to the possible but unproven, such as air pollution, to the wholly debunked, such as any link to immunizations.

There may be a real increase in autism, but the bulk of the increase has a more straightforward answer: we’re getting better at identifying it. That means more families are getting help sooner, which is good. A substantial part of the increase is proper diagnosis of kids previously diagnosed with intellectual disability, as this graph shows. Other diagnoses come from better identification of kids with average or above-average IQs, though diagnoses in Black and Hispanic children still lag.Β

TECHΒ TUESDAY withΒ NURSE MANNY 🤖

A time management skill I learned as a new grad was to walk fast. Whether between patient rooms or the med room to the nutrition and so forth, walking swiftly helps the shift run smoother. Shift Robotics has developed attachable shoes that make it simple to walk faster. Moonwalkers are the next evolution in walking since humans first started ambulating independently with a steady gait and no incident six million years ago. The shoes can accelerate up to seven mph as the wearer effortlessly increases their stride. With a built-in AI drivetrain, the Moonwalkers adapt to changes in your pace and can stop on demand via easily learnable foot gestures. In addition, they are waterproof with an ergonomic design that can fit on your favorite work shoes. Check out this video to learn more; time to make our ambulation trials a little faster and more fun.Β
