HANDOFF

Scared to Death?

While extremely rare, it’s possible to be scared to death for those with severe preexisting heart conditions. The surge of adrenaline from sudden fright can affect the heart’s electrical system and sometimes cause arrhythmia — potentially fatal in someone with blocked arteries. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also called broken heart syndrome or stress cardiomyopathy, can also occur when severe emotional or physical stress temporarily weakens the left ventricle. But it takes a serious scare—much more than your typical Halloween jump scares!

Super Seeds

If you’re carving out any jack-o-lanterns today, don’t hesitate to toss those seeds. Rinse them and then dry them out for a healthy treat. While they aren’t going to cure bladder infections or kidney stones as health practitioners once believed, “pepitas” are rich in protein and loaded with other nutrients, like magnesium, vitamin K, zinc, and phosphorus. They also contain antioxidants, which reduce inflammation and may help reduce the risk of certain diseases linked to inflammation.

TECH TUESDAY WITH NURSE MANNY

Spooky AI

As we prepare for a spooky Halloween shift, a new report highlights something frightening - the lack of transparency around AI systems like ChatGPT. While general-purpose AI is concerning, this should alarm those of us in healthcare specifically. While ChatGPT is general intelligence, when companies develop AI for clinical use, transparency about training data, capabilities, risks, and more will be crucial. Without transparency, we cannot ensure these tools are trustworthy and safe for patient care.

Nurses know firsthand how one small error can have serious consequences. We depend on trust and transparency. So, as AI becomes integrated into healthcare, we must advocate for responsible development, openness, and proper oversight. It's scary to imagine an unreliable "robot nurse"! Companies creating clinical AI tools should disclose details to ensure safety and efficacy. This will allow us to embrace the tricks while avoiding the threats of poorly designed AI.

FINANCIAL VITALS WITH NURSEMONEYDATE

Savings Supercharged: $3,000 Difference

In our profession, we know how to balance patient care with charting or night shifts with day life. Similarly, in the financial world, it’s all about balancing risk and reward, especially when choosing between stocks and bonds.

Stocks are like our adrenaline-packed shifts: high-reward, high-risk. They represent ownership in a company, and their value can rise or fall based on company performance. They’re ideal for long-term growth and can weather market storms over extended periods.

Bonds, however, are our calming bedtime routines after a hectic day. They’re loans you give to organizations, usually with a fixed interest. They’re generally more stable but offer lower potential returns. Consider bonds when you aim for a steady income and fewer surprises.

Wondering which to choose? Balance is key. Watch my quick video explanation here. Just as we need both high-paced and slower moments in nursing, a well-rounded portfolio often combines stocks for growth and bonds for stability.
