Earned with Distinction |
Fewer than 10% of hospitals in the U.S. have earned the prestigious Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association. These hospitals have high nurse job satisfaction, low RN turnover, and low 30-day mortality rates. But even fewerβjust 11 hospitals in nine statesβhave earned the relatively new Magnet with Distinction award, given to the highest performing Magnet institutions. See if your hospital or another near you received the new honor.

Itβs That Time Again |
Amidst one of the largest Covid surges since the Omicron wave, the FDA has approved the updated 2024-2025 mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. As with the updated vaccines last year, the new vaccines are formulated to better target recently circulating strains. Hopefully the summer surge reminded people of the importance of getting vaccinated, given that only about one in five adults got last yearβs vaccine, whose variant is no longer circulating.

Ready to Serve |
The final barrier has fallen for people with HIV who want to enlist in the U.S. military. Federal Judge Leonie Brinkema ruled last week that the Pentagonβs policyβwhich barred from service even those who are asymptomatic and have undetectable viral loadsβis βirrational, arbitrary, and capriciousβ while also contributing to stigma. Brinkema is the same judge who ruled in 2022 that existing service members with HIV can be commissioned as officers and deployed on active duty overseas.

MANAGER'S MEMO
|
Striking a Balance: Nurse Managers During Strikes |
As nurse managers, we may find ourselves balancing the support of our staff with the need to maintain departmental operations during a nursing strike. These situations are undoubtedly challenging, often straining our relationships with our teams.
Open communication is crucial and every situation is unique.Β Therefore, how we navigate these moments can vary. While itβs essential to respect collective bargaining agreements and labor relations policies, I believe in showing your staff non-judgmental understanding, no matter how hard that may be. Strikes have a complex impact, but their intentions are rooted in a desire for positive change.
I want to hear from you: How do you balance your responsibilities as a manager while supporting your staff during a strike? What strategies have you found effective? Email me your thoughts, and together, we can explore how to navigate these complex situations.
