Halting Polio Spread

More than a half million children under 10 years old received their first dose of oral polio vaccine during a WHO emergency vaccination campaign in Gaza that began last week. The conflict there has sparked fears that polio will spread after a boy developed paralysis last month from the first case to occur in the region in a quarter century. The campaign has already reached 90% of kids, hopefully stopping the disease in its tracks.

A Heavier Burden

It’s no surprise that up to half of nurses reported burnout and additional stress during the COVID-19 pandemic, but a recent study found that the burden was particularly bad for Hispanic nurses. More than 55% of Hispanic nurses in Illinois and New York reported burnout in a 2021 survey. Their odds of burnout were about 20% higher than non-Hispanic nurses, though older age was a protective factor. Check out these tips for preventing and managing nurse burnout.

Pregnancy Brain Is Real

Just about anyone who has given birth can attest to the fact that their brain appears to work differently afterward. But precious little research has actually investigated what’s happening in the brain during and after pregnancyβ€”until now. A new study reveals β€œone of the first detailed maps of human-brain changes before, during and after” pregnancy. Check out some of the incredible things found in a brain over a pregnancyβ€”with some changes lasting up to two years later!

Nurse Suicide Awareness

With September being Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, let’s take a moment to reflect on the need to talk about suicide among nurses, as well as the importance of decreasing mental health stigma and increasing access to mental health support for the nursing community.

Here are some key things to consider:

  • Dr. Judy Davidson, DNP, RN and her research team have confirmed that nurses are at higher risk of suicide than the general public.

  • While nurses are a vulnerable population, we can do something about it! Learning about the risk factors for suicide among nurses, knowing the warning signs, and learning to talk about suicide supportively are crucial first steps.Β Β

  • Fighting mental health stigma is vital in promoting an inclusive and safe environment for nurses everywhere.Β Β

  • Increasing access to suicide prevention and mental health services is essential for nurse well-being. Learn about the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and other support resources for healthcare professionals.Β Β

Reminder: If you are having suicidal thoughts, you are not alone. Nurse suicide is something we have to talk about this month and all year long.
