Bedside Vows |
A team of UK nurses is ensuring that the in-hospital vows of end-of-life patients are as special as possible. For those with terminal illness who havenβt gotten around to tying the knot but still want to, Natasha Steels-Webb, a critical outreach NP in North West Anglia, and her coworkers have created βwedding boxes.β These ready-made kits include flowers, balloons, and other decorations to make hospital weddings more festive, and the nurses are already working to expand what they can offer.Β

Expanding Treatments |
The federal government has updated guidelines for medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction to make it more accessible. A temporary pandemic policy allowed people to get methadone or buprenorphine prescriptions via telehealth that they could take home. That policy has now become permanent after research showed it was safe. Doctors can also prescribe higher methadone doses to prevent withdrawal. The changes should improve access for rural areas and improve treatment effectiveness.

A New Bill of Rights |
Despite being a chronic disease, obesity remains heavily stigmatized in society and within healthcare. 37 national consumer, obesity, and chronic disease organizations have endorsed an Obesity Bill of Rights to change that. The new Right2ObesityCare website describes the eight rights, including the right to respect, the right to person-centered care, the right to coverage for treatment, and the right to accurate, clear, trusted, and accessible information on obesity as a treatable disease.

TECH TUESDAYΒ WITH NURSE MANNY
|
|
Itβs All in Your Head |
|
Neuralink, Elon Muskβs brain-computer interface company, announced this past week the first human implantation in their FDA-approved PRIME study, which aims to allow paralysis patients to control devices
with thoughts. While the potential to restore communication and mobility is exciting, we know Musk over-hypes futures, so healthy professional skepticism is wise as peer results await. Further studies must be implemented before speculating on nurses someday calibrating cranial devices alongside our current skill sets. Initially, the data collected in the PRIME study will be used to train an algorithm to recognize each implanted patientβs unique neurological patterns. The algorithm will then translate the paralyzed participantsβ brain activity into computer controls, enabling them to move a cursor or type words using their thoughts. If the devices work as intended and no concerning adverse events occur, Neuralink may move beyond feasibility trials into testing safety and efficacy. Being
one of few in the space, Neuralink currently faces market competition from companies like Snychron and Precision Neuroscience.
