A Terrifying Trend |
Guns, knives, machetes, and other weapons are being increasingly confiscated in HawaiΚ»i hospitals, according to nurses. On Sunday, staff at Queenβs Hospital in Honolulu discovered a concealed gun on a patient brought in after a car crash β neither of his two concealed carry permits were for the gun he had. Earlier this year, another patient was caught with a ghost gun at a
Straub Medical Center. In June, the state enacted a law barring guns from many public spaces, but a recent court case has restricted the state and city from enforcement.

Looking at the VA |
If youβre looking for a nursing job at a Veteran Affairs hospital but are unsure if itβs the right move for you, consider the pros and cons. Pros: Youβd be working in hospitals rated higher in patient satisfaction than private healthcare facilities, and opportunities for career development, advanced education, and research will be at your fingertips. Donβt forget those attractive work schedules. Cons: no right for collective bargaining and striking, and mental health conditions and substance use disorder are common in VA patients.

Narrative Medicine: The Anatomy of Story |
|
The care of the suffering centers on giving and receiving the accounts of our signs, symptoms, and feelings. Narrative medicine arose to equip healthcare professionals with the capacity to receive these accounts skillfully and to recognize, absorb, interpret, and be moved to action by the stories told.
Stories are a fundamental part of the human experience. When we cannot find a way of telling our story, our story tells usβwe dream these stories, we develop symptoms, or we find ourselves making choices and acting in ways we donβt understand. Every client has a story that goes beyond the symptoms described within the debriefing space.Β
Narrative medicine is the commitment to understanding the lives of our clients, helping to deliver a more humanistic approach to care. The same conversation that explores and draws out the client's narrative can also become an instrument of growth. Experience narrative medicine and foster post-traumatic growth.
