Help is On the Way, Maui!

The Department of Health and Human Services has deployed a team to Maui, including clinical psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and nurse practitioners. The team of health officers from the US Public Health Services Commissioned Corps is there to provide behavioral health support to people impacted by the recent deadly wildfires. This includes education, assessments, referrals, and behavioral health services for wildfire victims as they return home. The wildfires have killed at least 97 people.

A Rally in Austin

Nurses at Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin are rallying to raise awareness of safety issues while Ascension builds a new tower for women’s services. The center’s cardiovascular ICU is so understaffed that some shifts begin with no nurses to cover patients leaving the OR. Moreover, the labor and delivery unit sometimes sees a single nurse on staff have to bounce between deliveries, with babies sometimes left cold, hungry, and “unstable,” according to an RN. Nurses at the center held a one-day strike earlier this year.

More Violence Against Nurses

In May, the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center implemented a monthslong hiring freeze that lasted until the end of August. The California Nurses Association is now saying that nurses and workers reported more than 30 incidents of workplace violence at the San Francisco campus since the freeze began. The health system says it complies with staff-to-patient ratios mandated by the state of California, and it has a workplace violence program that meets California standards.

Defining Martyr Complex

Recently, Debriefing the Front Lines teammate Michelle introduced me to the term martyr complex. “While I don’t want to label myself or anyone else, some of the characteristics feel uncomfortably familiar,” Michelle shared.

Martyr complex is a psychological term describing someone who self-righteously sacrifices themselves or their needs in favor of others. Instead of being a diagnosable term, it is more a pattern of repeated behaviors, not just a one-time event helping someone.

Signs include:

  1. Constant self-sacrificing in multiple areas of your life, not just work.

  2. Putting yourself in situations that hurt you in order to help another

  3. Repeatedly overextending yourself to serve others

  4. Belief that you are the only one capable of getting the job done

How do we overcome this pattern of behavior? Similar to most healing work, awareness is the key. Learn more about the martyr complex, find non-judgemental support, and dive deeper into self-exploration.
