Opioid-Free Pain Management |
Pennsylvaniaβs UPMC Shadyside Hospital has launched an opioid-free pathway for surgical and post-operative pain management, the first of its kind in the region and possibly the nation. Itβs a response to patient demand for opioid alternatives and uses methods such as regional anesthesia, nerve blocks, and non-opioid IV medications, along with techniques like
aromatherapy, acupuncture, and the nanotech-based NeuroCuple device. Since its May launch, 39 patients have enrolled, some due to past negative experiences with opioids or a family history of addiction, and they are reportedly βmuch happier on the pathway.β

AI to Streamline Nurse Documentation |
The Mayo Clinic is partnering with Epic and healthcare AI company Abridge to develop a generative AI tool to ease nursesβ documentation workload. To be piloted in early 2025, the tool will use patient visit recordings to streamline clinical documentation, including patient assessments, within Mayoβs Epic EHR system. The initiative aims to improve nurse efficiency by reducing
time spent on documentation, allowing more focus on patient care, though some in the nursing community have expressed concerns about AI and automated EHR workflows.

Wearable Doppler Ultrasound |
This summer, two Bay Area Sutter Health medical centers will begin using FloPatch, the first wireless, wearable Doppler ultrasound, to improve ICU patient care. This FDA-cleared device allows hands-free, real-time blood flow assessment, aiding in fluid management for critically ill patients. Placed on the neck, FloPatch transmits real-time data to a mobile app, helping
clinicians better manage shock conditions like sepsis and congestive heart failure. Medical directors expect it will reduce complications and length of stay, while research shows significant patient outcome improvements and cost savings.

From Dreams to Reality: NurseHack4Health Success Stories |
Have you been dreaming of a solution to a problem in your unit, but worried it's just a dream?Β Β Think again. The NurseHack4Health Pitch-A-Thon is your chance to turn that dream into reality, just like these inspiring success stories from previous yearβs awardees.
Geisinger Paws to Reflect: Combines peer support with animal-assisted therapy by training six pet therapy dogs to partner with peer supporters, providing stress relief to nurses across the system.
Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC): Developed the Dear Hospital program, which uses storytelling and photography to strengthen staff connections, improve morale, and reduce turnover, funded by grants for staff training as storytellers.
Vancouver Coastal Health: Developed AutoChart, an AI documentation solution using natural language processing to capture and transcribe bedside patient assessments, upload keywords to Cerner, and auto-generate handoff information and shift summaries; with grant funding, they plan to develop, pilot, and validate
the software, anticipating significant savings and increased staff satisfaction.
Did these stories spark some inspiration? Turn solutions into the next big thing at your facility. Don't miss out! Apply by August 2nd with your nurse-led interdisciplinary team and create sustainable change for your healthcare system.
The NurseHack4Health Pitch-A-Thon is presented by Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, & SONSIEL and sponsored by ALL IN: Wellbeing First for Healthcare and J & J Foundation.
