HUDDLE

Good Morning, Readers!

One of the things I find most interesting about the nursing profession is how many paths one can take to get hereβ€”and for many people, nursing wasn’t their first career choice.

Did you know that roughly 37% of nurses were second-degree studentsβ€”meaning they held a different degree prior to pursuing nursing? If you’re one of those nurses, I’m curious: what made you decide to pursue nursing instead of your first degree path? Are you happy with your choice?

Let me know here.

Nurse-Led Initiative Improves Shock Recognition

A nurse-led quality improvement initiative to better identify patients with cardiogenic shock resulted in cutting the time to diagnosis in half, found a new study in Critical Care Nurse. Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital in Plano, Texas, created a multidisciplinary shock team to more quickly recognize the signs and symptoms of shock and facilitate care among healthcare professionals. The team’s creation hasn’t affected patient outcomes yet, but the initiative has identified crucial factors that delay shock recognition.

USDA Requires Milk Testing

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a new mandatory national milk testing program on Friday aimed at improving tracking of the H5N1 bird flu outbreak. Farms will now be required to provide milk for testing when the USDA requests it. The program will start in six states, including California, where the virus is spreading fastest right now. The others are Colorado, Michigan, and Pennsylvaniaβ€”which are already doing bulk testingβ€”and Mississippi and Oregon.

Dramatic Decline in L&D Wards

In the midst of a continuing maternal mortality crisis in the U.S.,Β  537 hospitals have closed their labor and delivery departments since 2010, according to a new study. In that time, only 138 hospitals added an obstetrics ward, the vast majority of which were in urban hospitals. Experts worry the loss in rural areas will exacerbate the maternity care deserts, which are linked to more preterm and out-of-hospital births.
