New NP Program

The accredited online school Capella University has partnered with Optum (the health services arm of UnitedHealth Group) to create a new educational program for advanced practice nurses. The program’s first offering is an MSN in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. In addition to classroom instruction, students can access Optum’s national network to develop real-world skills and receive reduced tuition and leadership development. Capella and Optum are expected to launch a Family Nurse Practitioner program in the future.

Stolen Doses

Andrea Falzano, a former Boston nurse, has pleaded guilty to stealing hundreds of opioid doses from a locked emergency room drug cabinet in 2019. Over five months, she reportedly withdrew morphine, fentanyl, and hydromorphone 412 times using information from 299 patients who were already discharged. Falzano, whose license was revoked in 2021, faces three counts of unlawfully obtaining controlled substances by fraud, deception, and subterfuge, which could result in up to four years in prison, one year of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.

What Was It Worth?

In December 2020, Congress provided the National Institutes of Health with $1.15 billion to study and treat long Covid. The vast majority of these funds, however, went to observational research to understand long Covid symptoms, including millions devoted to set up and study patient cohorts, study biological samples and health records, and follow patients in the future. Only about 15% — $171.5 million — went to clinical trials, which have finally launched. Given the lack of funds left, experts think it's unlikely the clinical trials will yield any meaningful treatments.

FINANCE FRIDAY WITH NETWORTH NURSE

Saving vs. Investing For Nurses

It’s a mistake I made early on, and I want to show you how not to make it! There’s a big difference between saving and investing; it’s a difference of hundreds of thousands of dollars! I’m not kidding!

Let’s say you have $25,000. You’ve started a side hustle, picked up extra shifts or somebody in your life was generous. What should you do? I know many nurses who have put this in the bank, some in high yield savings, others invested.

Let’s take a look at the difference between each decision. If you put $25,000 in a bank account vs. invested $25,000, that’s a difference of almost $128,000 over 20 years!

How is this possible? Compound interest! Do yourself a favor, and play with our compound interest calculator until the ah-ha moment hits! When it does, take our Investing 101 Course, free to TNB readers!
