At-Home Cervical Cancer Screening Arrives

The huge reduction in cervical cancer due to screening with Pap smears and then HPV testing was a major medical achievement of the past century. But screening gaps remain due to healthcare access and patient reluctance to get screened. The first at-home cervical cancer screening tool to be approved by the FDA may help change that. Check out the new tampon-shaped wand from Teal Health that aims to make cancer screening more comfortable.

New Device May Help Reduce Strokes

Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the US, but a new device may offer doctors a new way to combat this cerebral menace. Researchers at Stanford University have developed the “milli-spinner” that works by “spinning away” the clots that prevent blood flow into the brain and cause strokes. The device, described in a new Nature study, may even have broader applications, such as clearing kidney stones or other blockages in the body.

Nurses Save a Life on the Way to Work

Nurses Sabrina Castle and Gianna Formisano were on their way to work at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's Breast and Imaging Center in New York when passersby ran to them with hope and relief. A woman, Merryl Hoffman, had collapsed with a sudden cardiac arrest outside their workplace. Castle and Formisano leapt into action with CPR and saved her life. Serendipitous eavesdropping led Hoffman to finally meet her saviors while in cardiac rehab.
